February 2016 Newsletter

February 25, 2016

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

The Marquetarians of the Carolinas November 7 meeting was held at Klingspoor in Hickory NC.  We had 23 members and guests present.

The Group participated in the Klingspoor Woodworking Show in Hickory in October and were very well received with a number of people expressing interest in marquetry.  Our members took their saws and knives and demonstrated various cutting methods throughout the Show.  They answered many questions about marquetry and the different ways of cutting and kept a crowd around them.

We held a silent auction of items brought by our members.  These included veneer, tools, books – all of which would be of use to someone just starting out or looking to augment their collection.

We discussed possible programs/demos for our meetings, and want to vary these topics from the simple ones for beginners on up to advanced ones for experienced marquetarians. We request that any requests for specific topics be sent to Bonnie Richardson at urabus2000@aol.com.  Also, if anyone is willing to demonstrate or lead a discussion on a particular topic, please let Bonnie know that as well.

Our Show and Tell included many items, from the State Fair entries to a project that demonstrated how to repair a hole in veneer, a student’s first (excellent!) efforts working on their own, and bookmarks to be donated to a fund raiser.

Our demonstration topic for this meeting was on wood burning  given by Michelle Parsons.  She gave an excellent demo, showing a variety of burning tips and burners, explaining the uses of each.  She also talked about how wood burning can be applied to marquetry, particularly in accenting some of our pieces.  She gave us a lot of ideas and I believe we will see the results of our experimentation with this technique in future show and tell items.

Our next meeting will be held in March 19 at the Folk Art Canter in Asheville.  As usual, we will get underway at 10 am with refreshments, and anyone interested in marquetry is welcome.  Our program will be a discussion of what we want to accomplish with the Club this year and also further discussion of programs and demonstrations for our meetings, as well as the May meeting.  Your opinions and ideas are important and needed – this is YOUR club!  Let’s have a great turn-out for this meeting.

We have several meeting dates set, but no programs.  These dates are:  July 30 at Herzog Veneer in High Point; September 10 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington; and November 5 at Klingspoor in Hickory.  The May date is open.  As you know, the meetings at Herzog and Sauers will include the opportunity for a veneer shopping spree.

Our dues for 2016 are now due and payable.  Please send a check for $15.00 made payable to me (Beth Woody) at 109 Elmer Road, Hillsborough, NC.  Some of you paid at the November meeting.  If you can’t remember whether or not you have paid, please drop me an e-mail and I’ll let you know.

Some of you are receiving this newsletter because you have taken a marquetry class or have expressed interest in our club.  We welcome your joining the group; however, if you choose not to do so at this time but want to continue receiving e-mail information about the Marquetarians of the Carolinas, please let me know.  If you do not wish to continue to receive information about the group, please let me know that and I will remove you from our list.

Until March 19, Happy Cutting!

October 2015 Newsletter

October 12, 2015

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our last meeting was held at Sauer’s Veneer “Candy Store” on September 12.  It was well attended by members and guests.

After a short business meeting, Al Spicer gave a demonstration of cutting parquetry, showing us how he cut a checkerboard.  As usual, he made it look so very simple.

After this demo, Jim Sweet gave a review of Ken Horner’s new book, Basic Marquetry and Beyond.  It is an excellent book, particularly for beginners.  I certainly plan on adding it to my “library.”

We have several entries in the North Carolina State Fair marquetry competitions, both novice and experienced categories, and a full report on these results will be made at the next meeting.

Plans were made for our booth at the Klingspoor Woodworking Extravaganza in Hickory in October.  We will be well represented with members demonstrating cutting of marquetry and hope to interest many people in the art of marquetry.

After a break for lunch at Speedy’s Barbecue in Lexington, we returned to Sauers for “dessert” – that is, shopping in the Candy Store!  And shop we did.  As usual, Larry had an excellent variety of veneer to tempt us.  If anyone went home empty-handed or unhappy, it was their own fault.

Our next meeting will be November 7 at the Klingspoor in Hickory.  The address is 856 21st St. Dr. SE, Hickory and the phone number is 828-326-9663.  The meeting will get underway at 10 am with refreshments.  We plan to have a silent auction, so if you have surplus tools, supplies,  etc., or things you are no longer using but are in good shape and may be of use to someone else, please bring them.  If you will let me know what you plan to bring for sale, I will get out a list the week prior to the meeting so .  Our program this meeting will be a talk on Woodburning.  Several of us are quite interested in incorporating woodburning into marquetry, so I know this will be a very informative program for us.

Newsletter Feb. 12, 2015

Good evening, all!

Below is our newsletter with information regarding our meeting March 14 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  I hope we have a great turn-out.   The program promises to be very interesting and helpful to us, as an attorney will be talking to us about copyright and trademark laws.

February 12, 2015

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our last meeting was held November 1, 2014 at Klingspoor Woodworking Store in Hickory, NC.  We had 22 members and guests present.  We began with a welcome and introduction of our visitors.

We had several entries for the 3-veneer challenge issued by the NorCal group.  Photos were taken and sent on to Ken Horner for judging and we understand the results will be in published in the Spring 2015 American Marquetarian.

We set our meeting dates and places for 2015 as follows.  Programs and demonstrations will be announced at a later date.  As always, all meetings are on Saturday.  Our meetings are open and visitors are welcome.

March 14, 2015 at the Folk Art Center, Asheville, NC

May 23, 2015 at Al Spicer’s shop in Dallas, NC

July 11, 2015 at Herzog Veneer in High Point, NC

September 12, 2015 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington, NC

November 7, 2015 at Klingspoor Woodworking Store in Hickory, NC

We had a discussion comparing cutting with the knife, scroll saw and fret saw with each method having strong support, resulting in the decision that it was up to the individual which way was the best.

The North Carolina State Fair offers a competition in marquetry in their Hobbies and Handicrafts division with several classes (experienced, novice, youth, etc,) of entries being .  This year, we had only 2 entries and we discussed making preparations to have many more entries in 2015, as this is an excellent arena to present marquetry to the general public.

Al Spicer demonstrated his method of sharpening a veneer saw to prolong its life.  He also demonstrated cutting stringers for our pictures.

I am sad to include news that George Moreton, one of our founding members, died April 8, 2014.  He was a master marquetarian and innovator, inventing a parquetry cutter to help cut the geometric pieces he used to do some exquisite items.  Also, Hilda Gladden, Raymond Gladden’s widow died last summer.  She was most supportive of Raymond in his marquetry and of our club.  Both will be greatly missed.

Our dues are now due and payable.  They will remain at $12 per year for 2015, but will increase to $15 for 2016.  If you have not already paid your dues, you may send a check for $12 made payable to Beth Woody to me at 109 Elmer Road, Hillsborough, NC  27278.

For our March 15 program, Christopher Clark, an attorney who will discuss how copyright and trademark laws apply to artists in general and marquetarians in particular.  Since many of us use photos and pictures to make patterns for our marquetry pieces, this topic should be quite interesting and help us understand what we can and cannot use as a pattern.  More information about Mr. Clark can be found at    http://tillmanlaw.com/our-attorneys/detail.cfm/attorney/C-Christopher-Clark

As always, our meeting will get underway at 10 am with refreshments available prior to the meeting.  We will begin with our business meeting and a show and tell portion, break for lunch, and then return for the program.  Let’s all bring something to show what we’ve been working on over the winter!

Until then, Happy Cutting!

August 2014 Newsletter

20 August 2014

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our July meeting was held July 19, 2014 at Herzog Veneer in High Point.  We had 11 members and guests present.  The highlight of this meeting was our shopping spree in their back room.  As usual, they had a fantastic array of items for us to choose from, and I think everyone found lots to their liking.

We were updated on the Hickory Woodworking Show which will be held on October 17 and 18.  People are needed to man our booth and talk with visitors.  If you can give any time to this, please contact Bonnie Richardson at urabus2000@aol.com.

John Robinson was confirmed as our new Vice President and chapter representative for the American Marquetry Society.

We had 11 items for show and tell.

August Ron Ainaire gave an excellent presentation on bleaching and dying veneer.  He had a prepared chart showing the results of different methods, such as using chorine tablets dissolved in water, but this should be done only in an exceptionally well-ventilated area.  He also described using foaming bathroom cleaner to darken veneers.  Another method for darkening veneers was to use 12 brewed tea bags and soak ash, lacewood, karelian birch burl, and sycamore.

After our September meeting, we will have one more meeting in 2014, which will be at Klingspoor in Hickory on November 1.  It has been suggested that we have a sale/auction of items at this meeting because of the available space.  We will discuss this at our September meeting to see how much interest there is in this.

Radial Match Jig Plans

Attached are the plans for the 2 jigs  for packet cutting radial matches, 1 is for straight lines and the other is for cutting the 30 degree field pieces for a 12 piece radial match… both jigs are identical except for the 30 degree fence on one (which also has a single adjusting screw), overall dimensions are 5 ½” W x 12” L… I’ll try to write up some instructions shortly, but the basic idea is:
Radial Match Packet Cutting Jigs

–      Layout the field pieces on a 12 leaf packet of veneer and rough cut

–      Put packet in straight line jig, set the adjusting screws to the approximate height of the packet, tighten star knobs, and saw to about 1/16” from edge of jig (I use a scrollsaw)

–      Using a template drum sander in a drill press, sand the edge flush with the jig

–      Put the packet in the 30 degree jig  with the straight cut against the fence, saw to about 1/16” from edge of jig, and use the template drum sander to sand the edge flush with the jig

–      This will give you 12 perfectly matched triangular field pieces to be assembled into a radial match

Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions!!

Feb 2014 News Letter

February 18, 2014

  Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our November meeting was held at Woodcraft in Greensboro.  It was sparsely attended with only 6 members present, but we had a great meeting and those who were not there certainly missed out!  For the program, we had a round-table discussion of all sorts of topics, including type of glue used, and methods of gluing, pattern making, pattern transfer, framing, to name just a few.  We also discussed using a mix of veneer shavings and glue to texture pictures, using casting epoxy in fragmentation, and that ammonia turns oak grey.

We had an excellent turn-out at the Hickory Show with 24 requests for information.  Each of those individuals is getting this newsletter by e-mail and we certainly hope that you can attend our meeting.

We discussed our 2014 meetings.  The first of these will be March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  We will get underway at 10 am with refreshments.  Jim Davis will do the program on radial matches.  This is one that I think we all would be interested in seeing!  Also, our club show and tell project of a picture using water in some way is due.  It is your choice how much or how little water you use in the picture, but it should be central to the theme.  Let’s have lots of pictures and see how many different ways water can be portrayed.  Don’t be shy — if you’ve done more than one, bring more than one!  For those who are just beginning and may not have attempted doing water yet, please bring whatever you are working on.  We would love to see it.

A possible schedule for other meetings in 2014 is:  May 10 at Al Spicer’s shop in Bessemer City; Herzog Veneer in High Point in July (date to be determined); Sauers Veneer in September, either the 13th or 20th (to be determined at the March meeting).  That leaves November to be planned, so be thinking about where we would like to have it and discuss it in March.

In addition to setting dates and places for meeting at the March meeting, as you may know, Julie Russell is having some health problems that have necessitated her resignation as the National Chairman of the Board, Carolinas Chapter Board Member, and Vice President of the Carolinas Chapter.   John Robinson has agreed to perform any duties in the interim until a permanent replacement can be found.  Please be thinking about this and be prepared to discuss it at the March meeting.

Along the same lines, Julie is looking to sell her Rockwell saw.  She said it has a 23+” throat, it is an industrial cast iron head on a stand.  It originally belonged to Pete Rose (one of our old time members), he converted it for marquetry.  I would like to sell it for $175.00.  If anyone is interested email me at:  russellja@hotmail.com or call me at: 704-474-4398.  I can bring it to the Asheville meeting in March.

If anyone else has any small items that they wish to sell or give away, please let Bonnie Richardson (urabus2000@aol.com) know so she can be prepared for this.

It is time for dues to be paid, and several members have already paid.  The dues are still $12 per year and may be sent to Beth Woody at 109 Elmer Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278 or paid at the March 15 meeting.  If you are mailing and paying by check, please make the check payable to Beth Woody, and she will send you an e-mail upon receipt of the check.

Directions to the Folk Art Center:  From all directions:  Take I-40 to Exit 55.  Follow the signs to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 382.

Until then, Happy Cutting!

October 2013 News Letter

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our last meeting was held September 21 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington.  We had 17 members and guests present.

Several things were discussed:

Ø  The national club is still looking for a vice president and a person to write the Question and Answer column in the quarterly publication.  If anyone is interested in either position or has questions, please contact Julie Russell (russellja@hotmail.com).

Ø  The Klingspor Woodworking show will be held October 18 and 19 in Hickory at the Hickory Convention Center.  If anyone can help with this, either with manning the booth, demonstrating, or providing one or more pictures for display, please contact Bonnie Richardson (urabus2000@aol.com).

Ø  The website for the group (carolinamarquetry.com) is still under construction and we would like to post information about each member who would like to have a part in this website.  Please send Fay or Bob Choban (choban@usucceed.com) two or three photos of your work to be posted on the website.  If you would like, you may include an artist bio including information about your involvement in marquetry, i.e. how long you have been cutting, whether you sell or not, whether you teach or not, etc.

Ø  The next meeting will be November 2 at Woodcraft at the Four Seasons Mall in Greensboro, NC  (directions below).  As usual, we will get underway at 10 am, with refreshments prior to the meeting.  Our program will be a discussion of things that have gone wrong with our pictures and how we corrected them or suggestions from the group how to correct them.  If you have any you would like to discuss, please bring them.  Visitors are always welcome.

For our program, Jim Sweet gave a talk on water in marquetry pictures and how to determine reflections in the water.  Some of the items discussed were how the angle of the sun affected the color and size of the reflection; reflections in still, disturbed, windblown water; and combinations of these.  This was very helpful since our club project is to do a picture with water and bring it to our March meeting, which will be held March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  Let’s see how many pictures with water we can display at this meeting.

We had a number of items for show and tell.  Included in these were several reference books brought by Al Spicer for us to look at.  These were quite interesting and hopefully he will bring them again to a meeting next year.  Also included were several first pictures by new members.  All I can say about these is, we’ve got some excellent marquetarians in the making!  Keep up the good work!

Of course, the main event was SHOPPING!  And shop we did.  If anyone didn’t find lots of veneer to their liking (I know I sure did!), it was definitely their own fault.  Larry had an excellent selection of veneer, from the old standards to some very new and unusual items, for us to choose from.  A big Thank You! to Larry and Sauers Veneer for hosting this meeting.  We are already looking forward to next year.

DIRECTIONS to Woodcraft, Greensboro:  From Westbound

Take exit 212  I-40(BUSINESS) toward Bryan Boulevard.  Take exit 217/29 (Old 217-High Point Road/Koury Boulevard) toward Coliseum area.  Turn slight right onto Pinecroft Road.  Turn left on Koury Boulevard.  Turn right onto Four Seasons Town Center Street.  Woodcraft is on the right.

From Eastbound

Take I-40/85 (BUSINESS) (right at the split of I-40/85 and I-40/85 Business) to exit 217/29 (Old 217-High Point Road/Coliseum Area) on Koury Boulevard toward Convention Center Mall.  Turn right on Koury Boulevard   Turn left onto Four Seasons Town Center Street.  Woodcraft is on the right.  The address is 504 Four Seasons Town Center and the phone number is 336-235-0900

Let’s have a great turnout for this meeting.  Until then,

Happy Cutting!

Richard Whitley

This photo was sent in by Richard’s daughter Sharon.

Richard, 82 years old, has been doing marquetry for about 11 years
now. The photo I’ve already sent you of the Crusader  was made in 2012, and is
13″ x 17 1/4″. He has a fascination with ships and the sea, but enjoys many
different themes. He doesn’t go to as many shows, promoting his work, so doesn’t
sell as much as others. All these I am sending you, we have here at our home in
Asheville.
