Hello All!

Our first meeting of the year was held March 31 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  We had an outstanding meeting with 24 members and guests present.  We had several new members join – WELCOME!  And there was lots of news and discussions.  We had 16 items for show and tell, one of which was Scott Jacobs showing a very large work in progress, which is a woodland scene for a chest.  He made this using a manual saw.  He showed us how he made it in more than one piece and then put them together.  See photos on Show & Tell page.

Jim Sockwell demonstrated how he does pad cutting.  He made it look so easy!  See Jim’s Member Profile page.

Another demonstration was a slide show presented by Jim and Joy Davis.  On a recent trip to Europe, they visited several museums that had exquisite samples of marquetry.  They took some exceptional pictures and had many of us spellbound with the show.  Many thanks for sharing with us.

We had lots of business to discuss.  See the Events page for the meeting dates and places for 2018. We will have a booth at the Klingspor Expo in Hickory in October.  Please mark your calendar and make plans to come man the booth and either demonstrate or just talk to the people about marquetry.  Charlie Brown will have more details and a sign-up sheet at a later date. Bylaws for the club were presented and accepted at the Asheville meeting.  These can soon be viewed on our website.  Our website is still in the process of revision – many thanks to Jim Davis for his hard work in this area.  Please let him know your thoughts, suggestions, and most especially compliments!

After 20+ years, Beth Woody has resigned as Treasurer.  Our new Treasurer is Don Patterson, 1714 Ramhurst Drive, Clemmons, NC  27012, 910-964-5215,  Dues are still $15 per year and are now payable.  Checks may be made to Marquetarians of the Carolinas and can be sent to Bonnie Richardson, 2541 Hawkins Road, Germanton, NC 27019.  Bonnie is maintaining our roster.

The American Marquetry Society is planning a show in Colorado later this year.  More details will be forthcoming as we receive them. For the past several years, we have been well represented with entries in the Hobby and Crafts area at the NC State Fair.  The digital catalog for competitions will be on-line around July 1.  Beth Woody will have details and paper entry forms at the July meeting.  Please consider entering these competitions.  There are categories for beginners and for more advanced marquetarians, so all skill levels are represented and you will be competing against similar experience levels.

Our club brochure has been a rousing success, necessitating a second printing.  For those of you who have not seen it, copies will be available at the June meeting.  The brochures are on display at a number of woodworking stores around the state.  If you know of some place where we should be represented, please contact Charlie Brown ( or Jim Davis (

July 29, 2017 Newsletter

Our July meeting was held at Sauers Veneer in Lexington, NC with 26 members and guests present.  Special guests were Claudia Carter and Ellen Drechsler, daughters of Claude Edwards, one of our founding members.  It was a wonderful treat to see the pictures of Claude’s which they brought with them.

The National Show was held in August in Colorado, and we look forward to a report of this show.

Entries in competition at the NC State Fair were discussed.  Unfortunately, the entry deadline is prior to the meeting, so individuals will need to go ahead and enter via either paper entry form or online.  To reach the information, go to the NC State Fair 2017 website.  Click on:  Enter a Competition, then General Competitions, then Handicrafts and Hobbies, then Competition Rules.  Our class is under Miscellaney:  Marquetry……  We are divided into two categories, Experienced and Novice.  If anyone has a problem filling out the entry form, please do not hesitate to contact me either by e-mail ( or phone (919-245-1109).  I’ll be glad to help.  There is a box on the Handicrafts and Hobbies page for printing a paper entry form or entering online.  Please, let’s have lots of entries to show our work to the public.  If you will bring your entry to the meeting at Al’s, Beth will be glad to take them to the Fairgrounds for entry and will pick them up after the Fair, returning them you either at the Extravaganza or the November meeting.

Of course, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the shopping spree in Larry’s warehouse.  And I believe everyone got lots and lots of goodies to play with!  Thanks, Larry!

Bob Moffett of the Chapel Hill Woodturners Club demonstrated the Lichtenberg process, which is burning a pattern on wood using an electrical charge.  The burnings resemble a lightning bolt.  It was fascinating to watch this process, as it is totally unpredictable.  Several of our members had the opportunity to try this process.  A very BIG thank you to Bob for such an interesting demonstration.

Since I’ve not learned to import pictures into this newsletter yet, I’ve attached a couple pictures of Bob’s demonstration to the e-mail itself…….

Next Meeting

As shown in the box above, our next meeting will be at Al Spicer’s Shop.  Al will provide a demonstration of marquetry pattern designs using a computer.

May 6, 2017 Newsletter

Our May meeting was held at Herzog Veneer in High Point.

We were brought up-to-date on the new brochure, which has now been printed.  Please notify Jim Davis if you would like a copy or know of a shop/gallery/woodworking store in your area that would be a good place to display them.  Charlie Brown will bring some copies to our July meeting.

The Klingspor Woodworking show will be held this year on October 27 and 28 in Hickory.  We will continue discussion about our participation.

Also, it is time to begin thinking about entering a picture in competition at the NC State Fair in October.  More discussion on this at a later meeting also.

Charlie Brown presented a very informative demonstration of doing the compass rose pattern.

OF NOTE:  Al Spicer’s table of many, many pieces was featured in the March-April issue of Fine Woodworking.

As shown in the box above, our next meeting will be at Sauers Veneer in Lexington on July 29.  As always, the meeting will get underway with refreshments at 10:00 am and a short business meeting.  After the business, Bob Moffett of the Chapel Hill Woodturners will give a demonstration of the Lictenburg Process.  Although primarily for wood turning projects, we hope to be able to adapt it to marquetry.  We will have lunch at one of the nearby barbecue places and upon our return,  we all get to enter the “candy store” and shop for veneer!  Larry always has lots of interesting items for us to choose from.  He has told me he has lots of new items, so be prepared!   If you want a particular veneer, please let me know by July 15 and I’ll pass that along.  If it is available, he will pull some out for us.

Our March meeting was held at the Folk Art Center in Asheville with 21 members and guests present.  There was lots of new business with the primary item being the printing of a brochure for our club.  As you know, we are well along the way to completion of this brochure, as a rough draft has been sent to our members for comments.  Please be sure to get your comments to Jim Davis ( by April 25.  Eleven people submitted photos of their work for possible use to illustrate our brochure.  Dave Peck, Ellen Kisker, and Ken Horner are acting as the judges to pick the photos for use in the brochure.  Those chosen are asked to bring the original item to our meeting May6 so that Al Spicer can do a professional photo for use in the brochure.  The ones chosen will be notified around April 25.  The finished brochure should be available around the end of May.  If you want copies of this brochure on hand, please notify Jim Davis (e-mail above) as soon as possible so we can be sure to get enough printed.

February 2016 Newsletter

February 25, 2016

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

The Marquetarians of the Carolinas November 7 meeting was held at Klingspoor in Hickory NC.  We had 23 members and guests present.

The Group participated in the Klingspoor Woodworking Show in Hickory in October and were very well received with a number of people expressing interest in marquetry.  Our members took their saws and knives and demonstrated various cutting methods throughout the Show.  They answered many questions about marquetry and the different ways of cutting and kept a crowd around them.

We held a silent auction of items brought by our members.  These included veneer, tools, books – all of which would be of use to someone just starting out or looking to augment their collection.

We discussed possible programs/demos for our meetings, and want to vary these topics from the simple ones for beginners on up to advanced ones for experienced marquetarians. We request that any requests for specific topics be sent to Bonnie Richardson at  Also, if anyone is willing to demonstrate or lead a discussion on a particular topic, please let Bonnie know that as well.

Our Show and Tell included many items, from the State Fair entries to a project that demonstrated how to repair a hole in veneer, a student’s first (excellent!) efforts working on their own, and bookmarks to be donated to a fund raiser.

Our demonstration topic for this meeting was on wood burning  given by Michelle Parsons.  She gave an excellent demo, showing a variety of burning tips and burners, explaining the uses of each.  She also talked about how wood burning can be applied to marquetry, particularly in accenting some of our pieces.  She gave us a lot of ideas and I believe we will see the results of our experimentation with this technique in future show and tell items.

Our next meeting will be held in March 19 at the Folk Art Canter in Asheville.  As usual, we will get underway at 10 am with refreshments, and anyone interested in marquetry is welcome.  Our program will be a discussion of what we want to accomplish with the Club this year and also further discussion of programs and demonstrations for our meetings, as well as the May meeting.  Your opinions and ideas are important and needed – this is YOUR club!  Let’s have a great turn-out for this meeting.

We have several meeting dates set, but no programs.  These dates are:  July 30 at Herzog Veneer in High Point; September 10 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington; and November 5 at Klingspoor in Hickory.  The May date is open.  As you know, the meetings at Herzog and Sauers will include the opportunity for a veneer shopping spree.

Our dues for 2016 are now due and payable.  Please send a check for $15.00 made payable to me (Beth Woody) at 109 Elmer Road, Hillsborough, NC.  Some of you paid at the November meeting.  If you can’t remember whether or not you have paid, please drop me an e-mail and I’ll let you know.

Some of you are receiving this newsletter because you have taken a marquetry class or have expressed interest in our club.  We welcome your joining the group; however, if you choose not to do so at this time but want to continue receiving e-mail information about the Marquetarians of the Carolinas, please let me know.  If you do not wish to continue to receive information about the group, please let me know that and I will remove you from our list.

Until March 19, Happy Cutting!

October 2015 Newsletter

October 12, 2015

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our last meeting was held at Sauer’s Veneer “Candy Store” on September 12.  It was well attended by members and guests.

After a short business meeting, Al Spicer gave a demonstration of cutting parquetry, showing us how he cut a checkerboard.  As usual, he made it look so very simple.

After this demo, Jim Sweet gave a review of Ken Horner’s new book, Basic Marquetry and Beyond.  It is an excellent book, particularly for beginners.  I certainly plan on adding it to my “library.”

We have several entries in the North Carolina State Fair marquetry competitions, both novice and experienced categories, and a full report on these results will be made at the next meeting.

Plans were made for our booth at the Klingspoor Woodworking Extravaganza in Hickory in October.  We will be well represented with members demonstrating cutting of marquetry and hope to interest many people in the art of marquetry.

After a break for lunch at Speedy’s Barbecue in Lexington, we returned to Sauers for “dessert” – that is, shopping in the Candy Store!  And shop we did.  As usual, Larry had an excellent variety of veneer to tempt us.  If anyone went home empty-handed or unhappy, it was their own fault.

Our next meeting will be November 7 at the Klingspoor in Hickory.  The address is 856 21st St. Dr. SE, Hickory and the phone number is 828-326-9663.  The meeting will get underway at 10 am with refreshments.  We plan to have a silent auction, so if you have surplus tools, supplies,  etc., or things you are no longer using but are in good shape and may be of use to someone else, please bring them.  If you will let me know what you plan to bring for sale, I will get out a list the week prior to the meeting so .  Our program this meeting will be a talk on Woodburning.  Several of us are quite interested in incorporating woodburning into marquetry, so I know this will be a very informative program for us.
