Dear Fellow Marquetarians,
Our last meeting was held at Sauer’s Veneer “Candy Store” on September 12. It was well attended by members and guests.
After a short business meeting, Al Spicer gave a demonstration of cutting parquetry, showing us how he cut a checkerboard. As usual, he made it look so very simple.
After this demo, Jim Sweet gave a review of Ken Horner’s new book, Basic Marquetry and Beyond. It is an excellent book, particularly for beginners. I certainly plan on adding it to my “library.”
We have several entries in the North Carolina State Fair marquetry competitions, both novice and experienced categories, and a full report on these results will be made at the next meeting.
Plans were made for our booth at the Klingspoor Woodworking Extravaganza in Hickory in October. We will be well represented with members demonstrating cutting of marquetry and hope to interest many people in the art of marquetry.
After a break for lunch at Speedy’s Barbecue in Lexington, we returned to Sauers for “dessert” – that is, shopping in the Candy Store! And shop we did. As usual, Larry had an excellent variety of veneer to tempt us. If anyone went home empty-handed or unhappy, it was their own fault.
Our next meeting will be November 7 at the Klingspoor in Hickory. The address is 856 21st St. Dr. SE, Hickory and the phone number is 828-326-9663. The meeting will get underway at 10 am with refreshments. We plan to have a silent auction, so if you have surplus tools, supplies, etc., or things you are no longer using but are in good shape and may be of use to someone else, please bring them. If you will let me know what you plan to bring for sale, I will get out a list the week prior to the meeting so . Our program this meeting will be a talk on Woodburning. Several of us are quite interested in incorporating woodburning into marquetry, so I know this will be a very informative program for us.
