Feb 2014 News Letter

February 18, 2014

  Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our November meeting was held at Woodcraft in Greensboro.  It was sparsely attended with only 6 members present, but we had a great meeting and those who were not there certainly missed out!  For the program, we had a round-table discussion of all sorts of topics, including type of glue used, and methods of gluing, pattern making, pattern transfer, framing, to name just a few.  We also discussed using a mix of veneer shavings and glue to texture pictures, using casting epoxy in fragmentation, and that ammonia turns oak grey.

We had an excellent turn-out at the Hickory Show with 24 requests for information.  Each of those individuals is getting this newsletter by e-mail and we certainly hope that you can attend our meeting.

We discussed our 2014 meetings.  The first of these will be March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  We will get underway at 10 am with refreshments.  Jim Davis will do the program on radial matches.  This is one that I think we all would be interested in seeing!  Also, our club show and tell project of a picture using water in some way is due.  It is your choice how much or how little water you use in the picture, but it should be central to the theme.  Let’s have lots of pictures and see how many different ways water can be portrayed.  Don’t be shy — if you’ve done more than one, bring more than one!  For those who are just beginning and may not have attempted doing water yet, please bring whatever you are working on.  We would love to see it.

A possible schedule for other meetings in 2014 is:  May 10 at Al Spicer’s shop in Bessemer City; Herzog Veneer in High Point in July (date to be determined); Sauers Veneer in September, either the 13th or 20th (to be determined at the March meeting).  That leaves November to be planned, so be thinking about where we would like to have it and discuss it in March.

In addition to setting dates and places for meeting at the March meeting, as you may know, Julie Russell is having some health problems that have necessitated her resignation as the National Chairman of the Board, Carolinas Chapter Board Member, and Vice President of the Carolinas Chapter.   John Robinson has agreed to perform any duties in the interim until a permanent replacement can be found.  Please be thinking about this and be prepared to discuss it at the March meeting.

Along the same lines, Julie is looking to sell her Rockwell saw.  She said it has a 23+” throat, it is an industrial cast iron head on a stand.  It originally belonged to Pete Rose (one of our old time members), he converted it for marquetry.  I would like to sell it for $175.00.  If anyone is interested email me at:  russellja@hotmail.com or call me at: 704-474-4398.  I can bring it to the Asheville meeting in March.

If anyone else has any small items that they wish to sell or give away, please let Bonnie Richardson (urabus2000@aol.com) know so she can be prepared for this.

It is time for dues to be paid, and several members have already paid.  The dues are still $12 per year and may be sent to Beth Woody at 109 Elmer Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278 or paid at the March 15 meeting.  If you are mailing and paying by check, please make the check payable to Beth Woody, and she will send you an e-mail upon receipt of the check.

Directions to the Folk Art Center:  From all directions:  Take I-40 to Exit 55.  Follow the signs to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 382.

Until then, Happy Cutting!

 Beth

October 2013 News Letter

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our last meeting was held September 21 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington.  We had 17 members and guests present.

Several things were discussed:

Ø  The national club is still looking for a vice president and a person to write the Question and Answer column in the quarterly publication.  If anyone is interested in either position or has questions, please contact Julie Russell (russellja@hotmail.com).

Ø  The Klingspor Woodworking show will be held October 18 and 19 in Hickory at the Hickory Convention Center.  If anyone can help with this, either with manning the booth, demonstrating, or providing one or more pictures for display, please contact Bonnie Richardson (urabus2000@aol.com).

Ø  The website for the group (carolinamarquetry.com) is still under construction and we would like to post information about each member who would like to have a part in this website.  Please send Fay or Bob Choban (choban@usucceed.com) two or three photos of your work to be posted on the website.  If you would like, you may include an artist bio including information about your involvement in marquetry, i.e. how long you have been cutting, whether you sell or not, whether you teach or not, etc.

Ø  The next meeting will be November 2 at Woodcraft at the Four Seasons Mall in Greensboro, NC  (directions below).  As usual, we will get underway at 10 am, with refreshments prior to the meeting.  Our program will be a discussion of things that have gone wrong with our pictures and how we corrected them or suggestions from the group how to correct them.  If you have any you would like to discuss, please bring them.  Visitors are always welcome.

For our program, Jim Sweet gave a talk on water in marquetry pictures and how to determine reflections in the water.  Some of the items discussed were how the angle of the sun affected the color and size of the reflection; reflections in still, disturbed, windblown water; and combinations of these.  This was very helpful since our club project is to do a picture with water and bring it to our March meeting, which will be held March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  Let’s see how many pictures with water we can display at this meeting.

We had a number of items for show and tell.  Included in these were several reference books brought by Al Spicer for us to look at.  These were quite interesting and hopefully he will bring them again to a meeting next year.  Also included were several first pictures by new members.  All I can say about these is, we’ve got some excellent marquetarians in the making!  Keep up the good work!

Of course, the main event was SHOPPING!  And shop we did.  If anyone didn’t find lots of veneer to their liking (I know I sure did!), it was definitely their own fault.  Larry had an excellent selection of veneer, from the old standards to some very new and unusual items, for us to choose from.  A big Thank You! to Larry and Sauers Veneer for hosting this meeting.  We are already looking forward to next year.

This photo was sent in by Richard’s daughter Sharon.

Richard, 82 years old, has been doing marquetry for about 11 years
now. The photo I’ve already sent you of the Crusader  was made in 2012, and is
13″ x 17 1/4″. He has a fascination with ships and the sea, but enjoys many
different themes. He doesn’t go to as many shows, promoting his work, so doesn’t
sell as much as others. All these I am sending you, we have here at our home in
Asheville.

Newsletter Aug 20 2013

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our July meeting was held at Klingspor Woodworking Shop in Hickory.  It was the first time we had met there and they have an excellent facility.  We look forward to future meetings with them.  We had 20 members and guests present and a number of wonderful show and tell items.

With regret, Hank Richter has given up cutting, and he offered his supplies at a silent auction.  There was a large assortment of tools and veneer with lots of excitement from the club members, and in addition to realizing some return on his investment, Hank made a lot of people very happy!

The new roster is almost complete.  For current members, a rough draft has been sent to you as an Excel spreadsheet.  Please verify your information and let me know immediately if there are any changes needed.  If I don’t hear from you, I will assume that your information is correct.  The finished and printed copy will be available at our next meeting, which will be September 21 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington, NC.

Plans are moving forward slowly for the National Meeting next summer at Sauers and Herzog .

There was a call for entries for the AMS National Symposium and Show.  Information was given out for those who may be interested in entering one or more pictures.

We will be participating at the Klingspor Hickory Woodworking Show October 18 and 19 (Friday and Saturday).  Details will be worked out at our September meeting.  Please check your calendars and be ready to let Bonnie know what you are able to do to help make this show a success.

The website is still under construction, but is up and running, and as of the July meeting, when it had been up for less than two weeks, we had already had 40 separate viewers!  John and Fay Choban have agreed to be the “webmasters” for us during this start-up time, and for that we send a huge THANK YOU!  Fay has asked for a couple photos of work by each member, so please send them directly to her at choban@usucceed.com   There will be a “members gallery”  on the website where these photos will be displayed.  There will also be a “help” section on the website where people can post questions for members to answer and/or members may list their areas of expertise and willingness to help others with problems.   We will discuss this “help” section more at the September meeting.  The website address is http://carolinamarquetry.com Please keep checking to see new additions!

Beth Woody will be teaching a marquetry class at NC State University on  September 28 and 29.  Further information can be seen at  www.ncsu.edu/crafts

The silent auction was such a success that we plan to continue something of that nature.  It will not be a regular item at every meeting, but if anyone has any tools, books, etc. that they are no longer using, they may bring them to any meeting.  A set price can be put on them or they can be auctioned off, seller’s choice.  It has also been suggested that we bring some of our marquetry books for members to look at to see if they may want to purchase one for themselves.

We have decided to do a club project.  It is to be a water themed picture.  Pattern will be your choice, and it may be a library pattern or one of your own design, it simply needs to feature water prominently in some way.  We are to have this picture completely finished by our March meeting.  Let’s all put on our thinking caps and come up with something spectacular to show everyone!

Our next meeting will be September 21 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington, NC.  As usual, anyone interested in marquetry is welcome to attend our meetings.  We will get underway at 10 am with refreshments prior to beginning the meeting.  Please bring your calendars and ideas, as we would like to discuss the dates and places of our meetings for 2014.  We would also like to know what you would like to have for programs/demonstrations and if you would be willing to do one of these.  Jim Sweet will do our program for this September meeting with a discussion/demo on doing water in a marquetry picture.  Of course, after lunch, we all look forward to SHOPPING!  Larry says he has some new and unusual veneer which will be available for us and he has also requested that if we have any specific “wants” he will do his best to fulfill those.  Therefore, if anyone wants something specific, please let me know by September 1, and I will forward those to Larry so he will have time to get them together if he has them.  Let’s have a great turn-out for this meeting.  Sauers Veneer is located at 363 Dixon Street, Lexington, NC and the phone number is 336-956-1200.
